Entertainment OVERLOAD

November 26, 2006 · 6 Comments

A couple of weeks ago I decided to get digital cable with DVR, through Comcast. Prior to this I had just basic cable, which is pretty much just an antenna for local tv. They were running a special, so I signed up.

Now if you aren’t familiar with DVR, it’s pretty much just like TIVO. And if you aren’t familiar with TIVO…it downloads all episodes of your favorite shows and saves them til you want to watch them.

Around the same time I signed up for this, I also switched from Netflix to Blockbuster Online. Coincidentally, at that same time Blockbuster implemented their new “All Access” hoo-ha which means you can now return your movies by mail as usual, OR you can take them into the store and trade them in for new movies, thereby triggering your next rentals to come in the mail. It pretty much doubles the amount of movies you have at home to watch.

SO NOW I have all these new dvd’s constantly coming my way and ALL of these programs on my DVR hard drive waiting for me to watch them….hours and hours of entertainment crying out to be viewed and returned or deleted.

I feel like my eyeballs are fried from trying to watch it all and my brain is turning to mush.

Something has to go…I can’t be held captive by all this entertainment. It’s too much. I suppose I could just exercise some self-control over all of it, but…..that would mean I’d have to have some self-control.

In the meantime, I have at least 6 novels that I bought waiting to be read. And there’s the Sirius satellite radio to listen to. Oh, and hello…actual other human beings in my life.

Plus, I start rehearsals soon for a new musical. That will be taking up a lot of evening for quite a while.

Something really has to go….

Oh my lord, I am so sick. Don’t know if I’ve ever had a cold this bad. I hurt all over and it is very painful to cough. My nose is so stuffed up it’s not funny and I have no taste or smell. WAHHHHH! Guess I won’t be cooking the turkey I bought. Poor CityWOOF. There, I said it, you don’t have to.

I’m nicking this off Dirk’s blog, who borrowed it from someone else.

Grateful

November 23, 2006 · 5 Comments

Happy Thanksgiving! Sorry I’ve been so bad about blogging…I PROMISE to get a grip and write regularly. But right now I’m sick with a cold and alone on Thanksgiving (by choice - don’t wanna spread the germs), so I’m just leaving you with these lyrics to a wonderful song by John Bucchino. Imagine, if you can, the lovely melody that goes with these words, and imagine me singing it to you. These pictures should help!

Grateful

I’ve got a roof over my head

I’ve got a warm place to sleep

Some nights I lie awake counting gifts

Instead of counting sheep

I’ve got a heart that can hold love

I’ve got a mind that can think

There may be times when I lose the light

And let my spirits sink

But I can’t stay depressed

When I remember how I’m blessed

Grateful, grateful

Truly grateful I am

Grateful, grateful

Truly blessed

And duly grateful

In a city of strangers

I’ve got a family of friends

No matter what rocks and brambles fill the way

I know that they will stay until the end

I feel a hand holding my hand

It’s not a hand you can see

But on the road to the promised land

This hand will shepherd me

Through delight and despair

Holding tight and always there

Grateful, grateful

Truly grateful I am

Grateful, grateful

Truly blessed

And duly grateful

It’s not that I don’t want a lot

Or hope for more, or dream of more

But giving thanks for what I’ve got

Makes me so much happier than keeping score

In a world that can bring pain

I will still take each chance

For I believe that whatever the terrain

Our feet can learn to dance

Whatever stone life may sling

We can moan or we can sing

Grateful, grateful

Truly grateful I am

Grateful, grateful

Truly blessed

And duly grateful

Love to all of you sweet menz and womenz in the blogosphere,

Mark

Dallas trip

November 12, 2006 · 9 Comments

Ok, I know I’ve been back for almost a week and ya’ll have been waiting with bated breath to hear how my trip was.

It was fun! Dallas is big and wild and full of handsome menz. I brought my camcorder and my digital camera to takes lots of pictures, but…there isn’t much to take pictures of there, except buildings and people. I would’ve taken pictures of buildings and people, but when I found myself out and about, the camera was back in Euless (where I was staying with Steven). So anyway, no pictures.

HIGHLIGHTS (in no particular order) -

- Reconnecting with friends: Steven and Mark
- Meeting new ones: Mark’s sweet and lovely husband Brian, Jason, Tazz, Alley, Rick
- The “Spider attack” Halloween decorations at the Roundup (pretty amazing)
- The crowd at the Hidden Door on Sunday afternoon
- Bill Shaffer performing at Alexandre’s
- Winning the “Bear chest” contest at Throckmorton Mining Co. on Wednesday night
- Dinner at Celebration
- My private, guided tour of The Cathedral of Hope
- Whattaburger (yum) and the Waffle House (chocolate pancakes) and Ojeda’s (mmm tex mex)

I could see myself living there, for sure. My visit definitely didn’t deter me from the idea of relocating. There is definite appeal, and some some real drawbacks, too. The drawbacks being: The lack of natural beauty in the area, the sexual repression by the state/city, the re-elected governer Perry, who stated that all non-Christians are going to hell…

But I still think it’s a great city, full of great folks. Thanks, Dallas, for a great week.
