My Summer Obsession

It’s Big Brother 8!
In case you thought I was this totally deep person (Though I don’t know what would have given you that impression), I am here to shatter your image of me. I love BIG BROTHER, the CBS reality show wherein 14 strangers move into a house together and vote each other out, one by one. Their every move and every word is recorded and watched 24/7 and it fascinates and entertains me every season.
I’m not sure about this season, though. The cast is not that interesting, so far. It’s a pretty cookie-cutter group. They’re all about the same age, with the exception of Evil Dick, who is the father of one of the young blond girls, and Kail, the 38-year-old wealthy republican Christian. Of the straight guys, one is exceptionally good-looking and built (Nick), and Zach and Mike look so much alike that it’s sometimes hard to tell which is which. There are 2 gay guys who used to be lovers but are now bitter enemies, and a bunch of generic young women, the most interesting being Amber and Jameka. One guy, Eric, is “America’s Player” and we will supposedly be able to control his every move in the house by sending text messages. He seems like a real dork.
It’s the group dynamics thing that fascinates me so much about this show, and others like it (Survivor, etc.). What draws people into alliances with each other, what behavior repels the others in the house? What would it be like to navigate your way through this circumstance. It plays on my own social insecurities going all the way back through Junior High School.
Big Brother is always on 3 times a week, but this year they’ve added even more voyeurism opportunity by airing Big Brother After Dark which is on every night of the week for 3 hour on Showtime. It’s uncensored. I subscribed.
I just wish they would more interesting types of people in the house: Different ages and body types, really mix it up like the real world does. I’ll still be watching, though. I hope Joe gets voted out right away, I can’t stand that queen.
