Annual Halloween Re-Post: “Haunted Apartment - A True Story”

October 24, 2008 · 3 Comments

Until a better ghost story happens in my life, I’ll just have to re-tell this absoluteley true encounter

“About 15 years ago, in Sacramento, Ca, my best girlfriend and I lived in the same apartment complex, right across from one another. One night she was entertaining a date, and I popped over for a visit. Somehow, the three of us got on a discussion of ghost stories and creepy stuff. He began telling us about something in the movie 3 Men and a Baby…he said that there was a scene where the camera follows Ted Danson as he is walking across set, and in the background, you can see the figure of a small boy right in the background, dressed in old-time clothing, staring right into the camera. The story goes that the scene for the movie had been filmed in an upstairs room of a house where a father had murdered his young son, and then killed himself. ALSO, the story went, if you look closely, you can see what appears to be the ghostly image of a shotgun mysteriously balanced on the bedpost.

“I have a copy of that movie!” I cried, and so the three of us trooped across the hall to check out video and see if we could find this creepy scene.

I found the videotape, popped it into my old, top-loading VCR. Here’s where the weirdness began, and, as far as I know, never ended…

As soon as I hit “play”, Anne’s date said “This is the scene!” My tape just happened to be right atthe scene we were looking for. Kind of weird, but anyway…the scene began, Ted Danson walks across the set and…there in the background…was the little boy in old-timey clothing staring with dead eyes, straight into the camera.

All three of us screamed.

And the tape popped out of the VCR. We screamed again. Then laughed. Anne said that it was the scariest thing she’d ever seen. “Let’s watch it again!” Anne didn’t want to, she was really weirded out, but I popped the tape back into the VCR, rewound for a few seconds and there, again, was what appeared to be a dead child, staring right into the camera. Hadn’t the actors seen this? The director, the camera operator? We screamed again, and this time the tape not only popped OUT of the VCR, but it shut off!

All three of us were kind of freaked out. But here’s where things got really strange…

That night, as I slept, a pounding began. This pounding began in the living room and I thought it was someone knocking on the door…with three baseball bats.

There was no one at the door.

Then the pounding began on my bedroom walls. One side, then the other. Then in the kitchen.

Now, when I say pounding, I mean a sound like nothing else I have ever heard; a real BANG! BANG! BANG!. Loud enough to wake me from my sleep. And all of my neighbors, too.

The pounding continued as the days went on, moving around the apartment. One neighbor came over, to ask why I was pounding on the wall…I told her I wasn’t. As she was standing in my doorway berating me, the pounding began again. Her eyes got real big, and she apologized for accusing me. She told me she’d been hearing the sound of a child crying, unexplained.

One night, the pounding woke me up at 3 am, and I got really pissed off and began screaming and cursing at it. “Shut, UP, shut UP, SHUT UP!”
As I stood on my bed, furious, I felt a presence so disturbing that I had to get dressed and leave the apartment. I went to stay with my boyfriend, it was really scary.

The neighbors continued to complain, and threatening notes began appearing on my door and a phone call came from the property mangagement company.

One afternoon Anne showed up with a Ouija board. We put out hands on the board and began moving the slider around. Anne suddenly let go of it and looked at me strangely…”Did you spell that?” I didn’t know what she was talking about, and asked her what had been spelled. “You did that on purpose…you spelled ‘I want to molest you’”. I hadn’t, and told her so. She really appeared to be quite disturbed.

I moved out.

Months later, I was visiting Anne and as we sat talking in her apartment, we could hear, coming from my old apartment across the hall, BANG! BANG! BANG!”

Bleh

October 16, 2008 · 3 Comments

Down with a cold since Monday. I don’t feel bad, just stuffed up and listless.  Prior to this bug, I’d been exercising almost everyday and have lost about 10lbs using my Bodybugg.  No energy to exercise currently.  Just lay on the couch, watch TV.  My flat is a mess.

Have I mentioned my Bodybugg?  It’s a great device.  It lives on your arm, and measures all the calories you are burning while you wear it.  I wear mine 24/7.   Then you upload the information from the Bugg to a website, wear you also log what you’ve eaten.  The end result is that you always know how many calories you are burning and how many you are eating.  Makes it easy to make sure you maintain a calorie deficit.  I love my BodyBugg!  10 lbs down now.

I’m addicted to CNN and MSNBC.  I love all the minutae coverage of the runup to the election.  I’m pretty sure this obsession will abate sometime after November 3rd.  I don’t know, though.  I listen to news more than music in the car anymore.

Is this a sign of getting old?

I think I’m going to stop dyeing my goatee brown and let it go salt ‘n peppa.

Personality Chameleon

October 8, 2008 · 3 Comments

Some people - possibly most people - are just who they are, no matter who or what surrounds them.  I have a tendency to be more of a “personality chameleon”, I think.  I adjust myself in words and behavior depending upon the personality and vibes of whomever I’m around at a given moment.  If I’m around someone who is quiet and reserved, I’ll actually get more gregarious than normal, but a boisterous person will cause me to withdraw, at least until I know the person well.

Sometimes I wish I could just “be myself” no matter what is going on, but it just doesn’t seem to work that way.  It isn’t that I hide or decieve, I just seem to find it prudent to wait and see how other people are, in their actions and words, before I let my own through.

Around some people, I feel more “myself” than I do around others.  I’ve always wondered why that is.

Maybe this has to do with why I’m an actor…once a character is created, I can just be that person onstage.

Autumn Meme (via Urspo)

October 3, 2008 · 2 Comments

Thought I’d go ahead and fill this out, it’s on Urspo’s site today.

Have you ever been apple picking?

No. Don’t they just fall off the trees?

Is there a dish you make/eat only during this time of the year?

I love pumpkin pie, it only occurs to me to eat it this time of year. It’s good anytime, though.

Will you attend a ‘tail gate’ party this season?

No, but I wouldn’t mind having a party in my “tail”.

When do you turn on the heat?

Once I’m no longer comfortable without it on.  Probably not til late November or December.  Even when the heat goes on, I’ll still have the fan turning on me at night.

How many sweaters do you own?

Not many, maybe 3. I’m warm-blooded.  I should probably pick up a couple of new sweaters. I like solid colors.

Are you fond of Nouveau Beaujolais wine?

I’m not familiar with it. I like wine, maybe I should try this one?

Do you get excited about Hallowe’en?

Yes, though in recent years there hasn’t really been anyone to get dressed up and go out with.  So I haven’t costumed in a long time. Though a friend and I have talked about going out as Little Edie from “Grey Gardens” this year.

How about Thanksgiving?

Well, my family is all elsewhere and there’s not really anyone to spend it with here.  Everyone goes away to their families.  I’m usually solo.

Is there an activity you do only in the autumn?

No.

Have you ever burned leaves?

No.

Do you own any ‘scarecrow’ decorations?

No.

Do you plant bulbs?

Yes, I plant them in light sockets for illumination of the various rooms in which I dwell.

Your fondest autumn memory?

When Halloween was fun and my friends and family were close by.

Wheels

October 2, 2008 · 2 Comments

My truck is working again! It was just the battery, needed to be replaced. I’m so happy…been without it for 6 days.  I’ll never take it for granted again!  Riding the bus is just NOT okay.  I don’t care how high gas goes, until I move closer into the city, I’m driving!

I live in a lovely little town here right next to Portland called Milwaukie.  Take a look at the Flickr photos I shot right around my street.  But I need to move closer in to where all my friends live…I’m a bit too far of a drive away. Rarely does anyone come visit, and I never get much chance to entertain.  Even potential tricks won’t drive out here…though I’m only 7 miles from downtown.  All anyone hears is “Milwaukie”….can’t drive the whole 7 miles all the way out to “Milwaukie!”  Whatever.

Got another salvo from the Hiv Pentecostal blog. Take a look if you want to. It’s from “John Brown”, the link is just to the right of this paragraph. No need to worry that it upsets me, it doesn’t. I know you’re right, Urspo, I shouldn’t slap around the tar babies. You’[re right too, Shawn. I’m really only just trying to proved some enlightenment, though I do come across as probably pretty mean to them.

Shawn, have I told you lately how beautiful, gorgeous and sexy you are?  Sure miss you.  I didn’t know you’d gotten married, congratulations!  You’re beautiful too, Doctor Spo.

Fidelio is the next opera I’ll be attending, Beethoven’s only.  Really looking forward to that!  But first up is “Spring Awakening”, a really great rock musical that is going to upset some people with season tickets who don’t know what they’re going in to see.  Can’t wait.  People really ought to do some research before they buy theater tickets!

The weather is about to change, rain is coming in.  I don’t mind.  It’s Portland…um…Milwaukie…

Attention Must Be Paid!

October 1, 2008 · 3 Comments

Eveyone likes getting some attention, right?  Hopefully the right kind of attention, the postive kind.  I saw a therapist recently, and she thinks maybe I love attention too much.  Possibly true. I’m not the kind of person who wants attention no matter what kind, but I must admit my pleasure when a post here on my blog riles someone like Joselyne, who describes herself as “Juish”, and who, after posting a comment here on CityWOOF also writes a post on the “Hiv Pentecostals” blog about my rant against Pentecostals.  You should take a look.  She mis-characterizes what I said, but does get the gist right.  God forbid I should think Pentecostals are stupid…although her comment that she does not “have HIV or Aids, never did drugs or whatever but still was a sinner & needed salvation. I am Juish & praised God I found it (salvation) in Jesus the Messiah.”  Nothing ignorant there…right?   It just gives me glee, makes me giggle and clap my hands.  She calls me a “a poor soul, full of hate, bitterness, sad individual”…Whatever.  Bless her heart, she’s a hot mess!

I’m not sad or full of hate!  I guess “poor soul” is a value judgement.  And yeah, I’m a little bitter that so many years of my life were wasted in the Assemblies of God, but there isn’t anything I can do about that now.  Oh well…screw you, Joselyn.  Bless your heart.

I absolutely love BUD’s comment from my most recent “Miscellania” post.  He refers to me as “Man-Person” (Love that!) and calls me “literate, thoughtful” and later on “FASCINATING”.  I love you, BUD!  You’re my BUD!  Such nice things to say.   I’d like to know you, too.

Of course, there are my faithful reader/commenters and I love and give hugs to all you, too.  Spo, Shawn, Seamus, Joe…you know who you are.  Much love on ya.

BTW, La Traviata was great, if a little long…I think Act III is superfluous.  It was a grand production, though, most enjoyable.

PRELUDE closes this weekend…

My truck is broken…

McPalecostal will NOT be in the white house in January.

Talk to you all soon!

Miscellania

September 24, 2008 · 4 Comments

Not too much going on…just working and doing the show.  We’ve had appreciative, if small houses.  A couple of published reviews, neither of them very good.  The reviewers just generally didn’t like the play, one complained about the set.  Whatever.  It’s an enjoyable production.

Going to see La Traviata tomorrow night, looking forward to that. I’ve purchased a bunch of Puccini and Verdi and Mozart opera recordings…I think I’m in danger of becoming an opera queeen.  I’m starting to really love it! Doesn’t do much for my “butch” image, but whatever…

Went to see Guys and Dolls at Portland Center Stage Sunday night…fantastic production. Loved every mintute of it.

Went to STEAM, our local bathhouse Friday night…not good.  There were hunky hotties looking for other hunky hotties and then, well, the rest of us.  It was a drag, a waste of money and time.  I think my bathhouse days are over, at least until I lose about 40lbs.

Which I plan to do with my new Bodybugg.  It’s a pretty cool device that lives on your arm and measures how many calories you are burning as the days go by.  You upload that information directly from the Bodybugg to an online program and then you enter what you’ve had to eat.  It’s really the best way I’ve found of measuring your calories in/calories out.   I printed out a fat picture of myself and put it on the fridge to remind me…

QUESTION FOR MY READERS:  What would you like to see on my blog?  More of my daily life miscellania, or essays about what I think about stuff or….what?  Just curious.

Have a great week!  Take a look at my Flickr photostream, link on the right.  I uploaded a bunch of pictures recently.
